Double your donations until Fri 2 Dec at midday - at no extra cost to you!
In this year's Big Give Christmas Challenge, we aim to raise £64,144 to support 10 rural Kenyan communities to adopt sustainable farming techniques, building their resilience against drought and climate change.
We have already helped these communities to build sand dams. Now we need to support them to make climate-smart changes to their farming practices, so they can use the trapped water to its fullest potential to make a living from the land. Even in the face of severe drought, by using these techniques, they will be able to harvest enough to feed their family and pay school fees for their children, breaking free of the cycle of poverty.
Match funding is limited, and is available on a first-come, first served basis, so if you'd like to maximise the impact of your donations, please get online as close to midday on Tuesday 29 November as possible.
Once people have built sand dams and have a ready supply of water, it's essential that they learn techniques that will make the best use of the land in the face of drought. Here are some ways in which your donations could help:
- £50 could provide a spray pump, to fertilise and protect a tree nursery, which will bear nourishing fruit as well as crops to sell, providing a vital source of income to pay for food and school fees for the family.
- £105 could provide enough pickaxes for a community to dig terracing for their shared plot - hard labour, but essential to maximise the yield of the indigenous pulses and grains that will be planted there.
- £220 could provide drought-tolerant seeds and manure to plant and fertilise a shared growing plot, a space for the whole community to learn and practice new farming techniques and experiment with new crops, taking their learning back to their own small holdings.
Please support us in this year's Big Give Christmas Challenge, and help twice as many Kenyan farmers to safeguard against the effects of climate change, so they can feed their families and send their children to school for years to come.
The Big Give Christmas Challenge runs from Tuesday 29 November at midday to Friday 2 December at midday. All donations must be made via the Big Give website.
